Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus

Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus is a form of Diabetes Mellitus. This is also called as “insulin dependent diabetes mellitus” or “juvenile diabetes”. This type of Diabetes is usually found in kids and young adults. Glucose is the main type of sugar in our blood. Glucose comes from the foods we eat. It is the main source of energy needed to fuel our body. Glucose level in the blood increases after we finished eating and it triggers the pancreas to make the hormone insulin. Insulin helps the cells to get glucose. Without insulin the cells will not get glucose and so the glucose level in blood increases. Type-I diabetes is caused due to the loss of insulin producing beta cells in pancreas. Thus pancreas loses the ability to produce the hormone insulin. The cells in the pancreas are destroyed. Once if the cells are destroyed they won’t able to produce insulin. Until now the scientists did not know the reason why the cells are destroyed. This disease cannot be prevented and it needs lifelong treatment. Children and young adults depend on daily insulin injection. By this they can control their blood glucose level. Thus no one can be predicted whether they will get type-I disease or not.
